Carleton Dispersed: Photos of the Covid-19 pandemic from across the country

This collection has items collected by Carleton students during Spring and Summer 2020 that speak to the Covid-19 pandemic across the US. Most of the student body was off-campus, at home or elsewhere. These photos and documents were collected near where the students were living and reflect living during the pandemic. Most of the contributions were made by students in Historians for Hire.

  • Life After People by Brooklyne Hurley

    Life After People

    Brooklyne Hurley

Brooklyne Hurley, age 22, has found COVID-19 to cause a lot of reflection for her. When asked how she was entertaining herself, she said "I've mostly just been painting." The piece featured above was inspired by Brooklyne wondering "what would life be like after people. What we've done here isn't just going to go away. These plastics won't ever leave and the Earth has to deal with that, not us."

  • Coronavirus Birthday Party by Marcella Lees

    Coronavirus Birthday Party

    Marcella Lees

After six months of not seeing her, my family made the three hour drive to Rapid City, SD to see my dad's mom for her birthday. We met in the park and one of her presents was a homemade coronavirus piñata made by my dad and sister. We hoped getting to destroy a replica of coronavirus would be a humorous way to acknowledge how hard this has been and maybe feel a bit better about all. The first photo is of the piñata; the second photo is of my dad and sister, Micheal and Jayne Lees, next to their creation; the third is a video of my grandmother, Marsha Lees, destroying her present; and the fourth photo is of my grandmother posing over the destroyed piñata.

  • ER and Surgery During a Pandemic by Marcella Lees

ER and Surgery During a Pandemic

    Marcella Lees

The first photo is of me in the ER wearing a mask. The second photo I took outside the Avera St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, SD at the drive in covid testing site. The two nurses who gave me my covid test can be seen walking away. The third photo is of me in the hospital about to go in for surgery with my mom, Michelle Lees, masked up next to me. This shows a little bit of the new reality of needing medical care in a pandemic era and the extra steps involved. I was lucky my mom was able to be with me at all for both the ER visit and the surgery as that had only begun being allowed the week before my ER visit. One of the nurses helping me made a point to tell me how nice it was to see my mom with me as it had been really hard for them to watch patients struggle in the previous months without anyone they cared about there to help them through things. Photo 1: May 26, 2020. Photo 2: June 12, 2020. Photo 3: June 16, 2020
