Summary
These digital 3-D models of an 18th century House of Industry are the results of a collaboration among faculty, staff and students at Carleton College and the Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse Museum of Norfolk Life. Since 2015, a team of researchers at Carleton have been working with museum staff to recreate the design of the House of Industry (aka workhouse) located at Gressenhall, Norfolk, UK which now houses the museum. Peeling back centuries of physical changes, we have worked to build a model that accurately reflects the original building. Our research team was led by Susannah Ottaway, professor of history and scholar of British social welfare, and Austin Mason, Carleton College’s Assistant Director of the Humanities Center for Digital Humanities and Lecturer in History. Working with a group of undergraduates, especially studio art major Florence Wong, Austin built the original sketch-up model that serves as the base for all of our 3-d reconstructions. We have also consulted deeply with Megan Dennis, curator of the Gressenhall museum, and her wonderful team of volunteers and staff members. Key members of the undergraduate “Team Workhouse” are Jeremy Fisher '16; Graham Earley '17; Sam Neubauer '17; Madison Chambers '18; Tumi Akin-Deko '18; Claire Jensen '18; Alex Wachino '18; Elizabeth Budd '19; Brittany Johnson '18; Nicole Connell '20; Cece Lasley '20; Spencer Lekki '21.
